The technical design points listed below about the Vuelo 1 Track Bike/Single Speed are part of the picture. Design innovation is where we start, beyond this, we also love beauty, we love a sense of aesthetic flow, we can’t help but build these qualities into every Vuelo Velo.
The Vuelo 1 – Track Bike/Single Speed
The seat tube curve facilitates a shorter rear end, and a degree of compliance vertically. This is due to the increased seat tube exit angle and the inherent movement that Titanium so alluringly allows. This is carefully controlled with tube wall thickness, diameter and curve radius for each individual rider.
We build with a wider version of Pressfit30, or BB86 Ti shells. This means the BB shell is almost 20 mm wider than a conventional BB shell or the standard BB30. The “Q” factor is unchanged from standard, the BB shell just reaches out around the bearings that would otherwise be in extending cups.
We do this to facilitate a broader chain-stay setting (attachment width) on the Bottom Bracket. This creates a greater mechanical leverage advantage at the heart of the matter. Think of a tree root or a structural foundation of any kind, it is stronger in its length or height if it is broader at its base. This is the only part of a bicycle frame where you have to have some width, simply because the legs fall from your hips, so to go straight down, they are already spaced apart.
This design also allows plenty of clearance of the rear wheel, our “Copenhagen” runs 35 mm tyres with ample room to spare, even if you break a spoke.
The “Wishbone” or dual chain-stay design is about creating more lateral rigidity via quite substantial ovalization. The amount of metal you are putting to work to resist lateral force, has a direct effect on creating compliance in the vertical plane where it is reduced.
More importantly than all the technical innovation.. the bike has that extra spark of life…. it “talks to you”.
